Understanding Outland and Inland Spousal Sponsorship

Are you living in Canada with your spouse while they are here on a temporary visa? Or are you married to someone outside the country and want to bring them to Canada?

They need to obtain a spousal sponsorship. It enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their foreign partners for permanent residency in Canada. However, it is crucial to understand the two types, which are outland and inland spousal sponsorship.

Let’s discuss them further.

Outland Spousal Sponsorship

Outland spousal sponsorship is for individuals whose partners live in a different country. If your partner or spouse lives outside Canada, you have to apply for this spousal sponsorship.

An outland sponsorship application is processed through the visa office or embassy responsible for the sponsored spouse’s country of residence. During this application process, the sponsored spouse can visit Canada. However, they must reside outside Canada until their application is approved and permanent resident status is granted.

Inland Spousal Sponsorship

Inland spousal sponsorship is available to couples who already live together in Canada. This category is appropriate when the sponsored spouse is already on a valid temporary visa or work permit in Canada.

During the application process, the sponsored spouse is eligible for an open work permit, which allows them to work for any employer in Canada. This category is frequently chosen by couples who want to live together in Canada during the sponsorship process.

Spousal Sponsorship to Citizenship

After receiving permanent residence status through spousal sponsorship, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship. You will have to fulfill some IRCC requirements. Citizenship will give you the right to vote, a Canadian passport, and access to social services.

One of them should be living in Canada as a permanent resident for at least three of the five years before the citizenship application, for a total of 1,095 days. A few exceptions exist, such as time spent abroad with a Canadian citizen spouse who works for a Canadian corporation or government. It may also be necessary to show linguistic proficiency and pass the citizenship test.
