Why Canada is the Top Country for Career Professionals – BCG Survey

Work Permit

Canada work visa demand is on the rise. Do you know that the majority of the career professionals looking to migrate for work prefer the US? But recent statistics seem to signify that Canada is overtaking the US as the most preferred country for working professionals and the Covid-19 pandemic has a major role to play.
The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) recently concluded a global survey in 190 countries to find out the global career immigration trends. Though the US has been a regular fixture in the top 5 of the most desirable countries to work for decades, the 2020 report saw it slipping a bit to number 2. In 2014 and 2018 surveys, the US retained the top spot two times in a row while Canada was number three each time.

Why Canada Work Visa is Attracting More Career Professionals

Global respondents chose Canada as their top country of choice to migrate for work. Amongst the reasons for this decision was a rising tide of nationalistic policies and erratic response to the pandemic throughout the country. While slipping to number 2, the US also ended up in a tie with Australia ranked in the number 2 position.

Covid-19 also has contributed its fair share to the decision. Career professionals worldwide have placed their trust in countries that have been able to contain the Coronavirus effectively.
At this point, it is glaringly evident that European countries that were once the crown jewel are increasingly slipping out of favor. Not surprisingly, Spain and Italy, the two European countries with very high virus caseloads and subsequent fatalities, are not present in the top 10 list. And the two new entrants to the list – Singapore and New Zealand have been highly acclaimed for their prompt and consistent responses to the pandemic.
With more than 200,000 global participants, the survey carried out in end-2020 does not take into account the vaccine rollouts worldwide that started in late 2020.

Remote Work from Home on the Rise

Remote work is seeing a seismic shift. A significant number of professionals are considering the idea of working for a foreign company while being in their home countries. Consequently, the number of people willing to move countries for a good job has seen a minor dip.  Most of the digital marketing and IT/ITES professionals are open to the idea of working for global companies while still living in their home countries. The US retains the top spot in the remote working space while Australia and Canada are tied in the second position.
With the new variants of Covid-19 being spotted in different countries, international mobility is also dependent on how the country’s government is handling the issue. And any signs of restrictive or nationalistic policies can end up denting the overall immigration numbers and future intake of in-demand talent. Many people are also considering pivoting or advancing their careers while still stationed in their home country.

Future Implications of Canada Work Visa

While Trump’s nationalistic and restrictive immigration policies had put a serious dent in the US immigration levels, Canada’s immigration had hugely benefitted from it. Canada’s highly immigration-friendly policies and welcoming stance continue to attract career professionals and entrepreneurs in droves than ever before.
With Biden’s promise of making America immigrant-friendly, Canada’s immigration numbers could see a temporary blip. But it may actually be the right time to apply for a Canadian work visa and move to the world’s most desirable country to work, that too with less competition.
London continues to hold the top spot, with Toronto coming in at the 14th position in the top cities list. Vancouver is in the number 20 position, while Montreal clocks in at the 24th position. In fact, the BCG report rightly pointed out that even though individual Canadian cities may have a weaker global positioning, but Canada as a whole is a compelling global brand and is highly appealing for career professionals.
Specifically, Canada continues to attract the cream of the crop, including talented and skilled immigrants with Master’s degrees, PHDs, people with digital training, and a good majority of talent below 30.
