How to apply for permanent residence in Canada from inside Canada – (90,000 essential temporary workers and international graduates spots open)

Express Entry Consultant

On April 14, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Honorable Marco E. L. Mendicino, announced new immigration pathways for more than 90,000 temporary workers, international students, and an unlimited number of French-speaking applicants.
Six new immigration streams were launched that allow them to fulfill their dreams of becoming Canadian permanent residents and contribute to Canada’s economy.
With an ambitious immigration target of 1.2 million new permanent residents over the next 3 years, Canada is focusing more on domestic immigration. Since the coronavirus-induced travel ban and restrictions, thousands of foreign nationals are not able to immigrate to Canada. At this time, IRCC is encouraging international students and temporary workers already residing within the country to make their applications for permanent residency.
With low fertility rates and a fast-aging population, Canada is looking to grow its population with high immigration. The fast growing pandemic has been devastating for Canadian immigration in 2020. Since the new permanent residents who came to Canada was much lower as compared to the immigration targets, Canada is looking to set that right by encouraging more immigration in 2021.
Since Canada has welcomed more than 50,000 new permanent residents in the first two months of 2021, now is the best time to make your application for Canadian PR.
Applicants working in healthcare occupation and other essential jobs across diverse fields such as food production, distribution, or caregiving may be eligible to apply for Canadian permanent residency.

New Immigration Pathways for Temporary Workers & International Students

As a special public policy, these new immigration streams will help to apply for Canadian permanent residency particularly to international students and temporary workers already living and working in different Canadian provinces.
Giving them more opportunities to become Canadian residents is a wonderful opportunity as they already possess the necessary experience and valued skills required to accelerate Canada’s economy and fight the pandemic.

  • Temporary workers currently employed in long term care homes, hospitals, other health care occupations, frontline and essential sectors in Canada will be eligible to apply
  • International students who have successfully completed a Canadian post-secondary program and graduated in the last 4 years (not before January 2017) will be eligible to apply
  • Bilingual applicants or French-speaking individuals can make their application without any number caps

French-speaking immigration pathway

Three additional streams have been introduced to promote the development of Francophone minority communities and foster Canada’s official languages. They do not have any intake caps and are applicable for bilingual or French-speaking candidates only.
Additionally, international students, French speakers, and temporary workers must fulfill criteria that include but is not limited to:

  • Language proficiency in either English or French (Canada’s official languages)
  • Should be able to fulfill all necessary requirements for general admissibility to Canada
  • Should be living and working in Canada at the time of making the application (except the province of Quebec)

Important Dates for the New Immigration Pathways Applications

As per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canadian permanent residency applications submission will open from May 6, 2021, under these streams:

  • 20,000 applications available for temporary workers in the field of health care
  • 30,000 applications available for temporary workers in the frontline and other selected essential occupations in Canada
  • 40,000 applications for international students who have completed their education from a Canadian institution

It is important to note that the last date to submit the application under new program is November 5, 2021. Any applications received after this date may be rejected.  If the immigration stream limits are reached before the last date, the application intake will be paused. Approximately 90,000 applicants are expected to receive their Canadian permanent residency under these three new streams in 2021.
